From language barrier to door
Immigrants coming to America hope to use their skills and hard work to make America stronger, but often they find their language skills bar them from realizing that dream. Difficulty in expressing themselves in standard conversational English or a strong accent can close many doors for them.
Agora is addressing this hurdle that stands in the way of new Americans realizing the American Dream. The Accent-Reduction Program is an innovative language-learning program that provides "door openers" to new Americans so they can use their talents to connect with opportunities.
How the Program Works
- The program combines self-study and weekly conversation sessions with an assigned mentor.
- The self-study is done using a software program available through Agora. The participant may purchase the software, or borrow a laptop computer from Agora with the software installed.
- The program is designed to be completed in 12 weeks with at least three hours a week of computer lessons. Participants proceed at different rates.
- There isno cost for the instruction. However, participants are expected to sign a commitment form.
- The conversation mentor is an Agora volunteer who is a leader in his or her community. Mentors and participants meet at a time and place that is convenient to both.
Advantages of the Program
- The program is built on relationships that can develop into strong friendships.
- The one-on-one mentor conversations build self-confidence and helps participants learn the subtlety of American speaking.
- The program builds bridges to American culture and helps the mentor learn more about other cultures and countries.
- Participants can arrange the language sessions to fit their schedules.
